How I've Grown and What I Have Learned

This first semester has just flown by, but it was great.  At first it was rough, being away from home and all my friends, but I am not really homesick anymore and breaks are just that much better when I get to see all my close friends again! I love seeing all of my old friends, but I have made so many new ones.  I have made a lot of new friends and some that will last a lifetime.  I have become way more responsible and it isn't bad living on my own anymore.  With my classes I have learned more than I did in my four years of high school.  I know these are pretty typical things, but it has only been one semester! I hope that with my next couple years here I can learn and grow much more as a person! It has been a rough but great semester and I am ready for what the next one brings me.

The Hixson Award

I had never heard about this scholarship before, until I got an email from Iowa State about it.  So I decided to check it out and figured why not I might as well try.  I didn't think I would really get it and when I did I was so happy and surprised.  The letter was sitting on my kitchen table when I got home from work and I opened it and started freaking out and ran to wake up my mom.  She was just as excited as I was. 
I have two younger sisters at home and it has always just been my mom and us, so I knew I was going to have to pay for college on my own.  And this scholarship saved me.  With this scholarship it is possible for me to go to college, so in other words this scholarship means the world to me. 
The Hixson program is great, it offers so much and has been a great help.  I have learned a lot that I probably wouldn't have learned on my own, like information on studying abroad and national student exchange.  It has also helped me make great, life-long friendships.  So I'd just like to say a big Thanks! to the Hixson Program.
